The Korea-Japan Nuclear Safety and Decommissioning Technical Seminar was jointly hosted by the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF) and Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) from July 8 to July 11 in Japan.

The seminar was composed of technical seminars, a comparative visit of between the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) in Fukushima and the Onagawa NPS in Miyagi, and a visit to research institutions under JAEA for the purpose of not only exploring the potential cooperation between the two countries in the field of nuclear decommissioning but also awakening the nuclear safety consciousness.

17 Korean participants visited the Fukushima Daiichi NPS to examine restoration sites after the accident and the Onagawa NPS to look closely at facilities and systems against natural disasters such as tsunami and earthquake. They also visited Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development, Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), and Okuma Analysis and Research Center which were established as core R&D facilities of JAEA. During the seminar at the centers, they learned about the status and concrete plan for the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPS in a timely and appropriate manner. There was an active exchange of opinion and information among all participants from both Korea and Japan after making presentations from both countries.

KAIF has a plan to hold a seminar and run a program of overseas sites visit on a regular basis for enhancing the cooperation with various countries in the field of the nuclear safety and decommissioning.
