KAIF and JAIF Conduct Joint Field Training on Nuclear Decommissioning in Japan
Hands-On Education at Key Sites Including Fukushima Daiichi and Tokai Nuclear Power Plants

The Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF), in collaboration with the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF), successfully conducted the 2024 Nuclear Decommissioning Field Training Program in Japan from June 24 to 28. A total of 37 participants from Korea’s nuclear industry, academia, and research sectors took part in this five-day program.
The training began with a two-hour lecture session, organized with the support of the Tokyo Centre of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). The session provided an overview of Japan’s current nuclear landscape, including the status of reactor restarts, the progress of decommissioning at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and the discharge of ALPS-treated water.

Following the lectures, the Korean delegation traveled to the Fukushima region for a three-day field tour. Participants visited the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and the TEPCO Decommissioning Archive Center, where they received a briefing from TEPCO on the accident recovery process and lessons learned in nuclear safety. They also had the opportunity to observe safety enhancement measures and the current status of contaminated water treatment.

The delegation then toured the JAEA Naraha Remote Technology Development Center, where they observed various mock-up facilities and virtual reality simulators developed for decommissioning applications. The program concluded with a visit to the JAPC Tokai Nuclear Power Plant, where participants inspected the decommissioning site, including the heat exchanger, main control room, and the coastal seawall under construction.
KAIF intends to continue offering this program to enable more professionals from the Korean nuclear industry to gain firsthand insight into the practices and experiences of leading countries in nuclear decommissioning.
