The Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF), led by Chairman Jooho Hwang, participated in the 2nd Roadmaps to New Nuclear high-level meeting held in Paris, France, from September 19 to 20, 2024. During the event, KAIF joined representatives from major nuclear associations and institutions around the world in issuing a joint statement emphasizing the critical role of nuclear energy in addressing global climate and energy challenges.
The joint statement was endorsed by ten key organizations in the global nuclear community, including:
KAIF (Korea), World Nuclear Association (WNA), Nucleareurope, Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) of the U.S., Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) of the UK, Groupement des Industriels Français de l’Énergie Nucléaire (GIFEN) of France, Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF), Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA), CANDU Owners Group (COG), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
In the statement, the organizations jointly called on governments and stakeholders to:
– Establish policies that promote the deployment of nuclear technologies
– Ensure access to national and international climate finance mechanisms for nuclear development
– Include nuclear energy in the investment portfolios of multilateral financial institutions and enhance support capacity
– Clarify financing and investment return mechanisms, and incorporate nuclear in clean energy finance frameworks
– Strengthen nuclear fuel supply chains in support of energy security objectives for OECD member states
– Invest in education and workforce development to cultivate the next generation of nuclear scientists, engineers, and skilled professionals
– Reinforce nuclear R&D and supply chain capabilities within OECD countries
– Expand international regulatory cooperation to accelerate deployment of nuclear technologies
The Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference, organized by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), is a high-level international platform that brings together government officials, industry leaders, and nuclear experts to explore the role of nuclear power in meeting global energy needs and climate targets.
KAIF also participated in the inaugural edition of the event in 2023, where a similar joint statement was signed. KAIF remains committed to continued collaboration with international partners to promote the global role of nuclear energy in achieving a sustainable and secure energy future.
